Description: The Pediatric Respirology Nurse Practitioner (NP) is an advanced practice nurse who is authorized and competent to perform comprehensive assessment, diagnosis (including the ordering and interpretation of tests), intervention (including ordering of medications), management, referral, and evaluation of all patient care needs. Functioning independently and in collaboration with a multidisciplinary clinical team, the NP works collaboratively with Physicians, residents, and/or fellows with primary responsibility to contribute to the care plan. Provides leadership and actively participates in program development, evaluation, clinical research, education, and clinical teaching activities based on best practice and family centered care. Participates in interdisciplinary collaboration in the practice setting to determine and regularly review local guidelines for drug prescription, distribution, monitoring and record keeping, ensuring consistency with provincial prescribing and distributing guidelines. The NP accepts responsibility for maintaining continuing competencies through ongoing professional development including participation in education programs, research and continuous quality activities. Adheres to the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) Code of Ethics for RNs and AHS directives, policies, protocols, and procedures. Performs restricted activities and care within the full scope of practice as defined under the Health Professions Act (HPA).
PLEASE NOTE: The Alberta Union of Nurse Practitioners (AUNP) was certified by the Alberta Labour Relations Board on December 20, 2021, as the bargaining agent for all employees of Alberta Health Services (AHS) who are nurse practitioners performing advanced nursing care or nursing instruction.
Required Qualifications: Master of Nursing or equivalent graduate degree with a focus on advanced clinical nursing practice in pediatric respirology. A minimum of 3-5 years of pediatric and/or critical care clinical experience as a registered nurse or nurse practitioner is required. Current and valid registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) and entered on the NP Roster of the CRNA under the Health Professions Act. Current Basic Life Support Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification is required.
Additional Required Qualifications: Demonstrated ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team. Self-directed with the ability to work in a patient and family centered, multidisciplinary team environment. Demonstrated leadership ability. Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Strong clinical skills. Excellent critical thinking.
Preferred Qualifications: Completion of a recognized Nurse Practitioner program in a child health stream. Experience with pediatric respirology patient population. Connect Care experience is required. Computer experience (MS Office, Netcare) is an asset. PALS/ACLS certification is an asset.
