Alberta to resume Connect Care activities

Waves 2 and 3 of Connect Care were delayed in March, due to the high demands of Alberta's COVID-19 response.

Alberta Health Services has adjusted the wave rollout plan and sequencing, based on the impact of COVID-19. The launch dates for waves 2, 3, and 4 are as follows:

· Wave 2: Launch date - Saturday, October 24, 2020

· Wave 3: Launch date - Saturday, February 27, 2021

· Wave 4: Launch date - Saturday, June 5, 2021

On November 3, 2019 Alberta Health Services launched Connect Care to enhance the way they provide healthcare.

What is Connect Care

Connect Care is a new common clinical information system shifting away from the out-of-date system that formerly relied on paper records. It will house all AHS medical records, prescriptions and care history at AHS facilities, even including AHS doctor’s notes. This new, comprehensive system allows patients to interact with their own healthcare information, and helps clinicians see all patient information in one place.

  • To launch wave 1 more than 19,000 users – including more than 3,000 physicians - have undergone extensive training for several months, including onsite training in hospitals and clinics, training in classrooms, and extensive online learning.

  • All users have experience using the system, and ongoing supports and resources are available and ready to help them with this transition.

  • In addition, a 24/7 command centre has been activated to respond in real-time to any concerns, issues or questions that may arise.

There will be nine implementation waves in total.

Wave One includes: AHS sites and programs primarily in the Edmonton Zone, at the Walter C Mackenzie (WCM) Campus, the East Edmonton Health Centre, Pharmacy and Diagnostic Imaging sites in the Edmonton Zone, Alberta Precision Labs sites in Edmonton and the North Zone, DynaLIFE sites across Alberta and labs at the Cross Cancer Institute, and hundreds of ambulatory clinics in the Edmonton Zone.

Connect Care will help ensure that high-quality care is being consistently delivered across the province. It allows for recording and sharing patients’ health information with patients themselves and their healthcare teams. Thus, the whole healthcare team, including patients, will have the best possible information throughout their care journey.
